Forecasting & Field Work

Through research roles, I have experience in a variety of field work and weather forecasting. In addition, I have spent much of my federal contracting career working with experienced forecasters to train them how to forecast a variety of different scenarios. See the examples below for my work in these areas.

Forecasting and Field Work on a NASA Field Campaign in the Caribbean

...

In 2020 and 2021, I planned, worked on, and led components of a NASA field campaign focused on studying a variety of topics including validating satellite measurements and improving our understanding of tropical oceanic convection.

Prior to the campaign, I worked with the team to plan potential flight paths, built real-time satellite-based observational products, and prepared the ballooning team.

During the campaign, I was the lead for weather balloon operations, planning schedules, instructing the team, and gathering and processing balloon data. I also worked on flight operations, making forecasts for convective activity, moisture, aerosols, and tropical cyclones, and developing flight plans that aligned with those forecasts.

Building Expertise in Forecasting

...

Throughout my time at The COMET Program, I have trained forecasters to forecast for a variety of weather phenomena and in a variety of different situations. This involves developing conceptual models of phenomena for forecasters, building forecasters understanding of products they can use, and laying out scenarios in which they use them in a realistic setting. Listed below are a variety of different trainings I have developed. These depict the development of a conceptual model for blowing snow, to understanding National Blend of Model forecast products for precipitation forecasting, to the forecast process for smoke, sea ice, or fire weather forecasting, to forecast communications.
